ARCHÉOL. Tertre artificiel d'Amérique du Nord construit par les peuples précolombiens. On trouve en effet sur les bords du Mississippi des collines artificielles de 20 à 30 mètres de haut (...), des terrassements gigantesques, affectant les formes les plus diverses, des Mounds, comme les appellent les Américains, qui prouvent qu'antérieurement des peuples plus avancés que les Peaux-Rouges avaient habité ces contrées (A. BERTILLON, Les Races sauvages, Paris, Masson, s.d. [1883], p. 92). Les américanistes rencontrent (...) chez les Indiens des sources d'énergie cachée (...) et des divinités (astrales ou élémentaires), les lieux saints (...) mounds et les clochettes (Philos., Relig., 1957, p. 42-15).
Prononc. et Orth. :[mawnd], [mund]. Au plur. des mounds. Étymol. et Hist. 1875 (JOLY, Nature, p. 166 ds BONN., p. 96). Empr. à l'angl. mound d'orig. obsc., d'abord « haie, palissade » d'où « talus, digue » et, prob. par attraction avec mount « mont », att. dep. le XVIIIe s. au sens de « tumulus » (1726 ds NED), en partic. pour désigner les monticules de terre élevés par d'anciennes tribus indiennes d'Amérique du Nord (1732 mount, 1775 mound ds Americanisms).
